Gloves

First, you will need a great pair of gloves in your martial arts equipment line up. Settle for cheap, skimpy gloves and not only will you not perform as well, you just might get hurt. No martial artist wants to be out of commission so be sure you choose quality, name brand gloves that will compliment your training.

There are a myriad of gloves on the market today. Narrow your search down by considering exactly what you need the glove for. You need training gloves to train in, fight gloves to fight in, bag gloves for use on the heavy bag and so on.

Whether you are into boxing, kickboxing, MMA or another sport, you have many options available. The choices can be overwhelming.

Gloves also come in an array of various construction. Some are made with leather, others with vinyl and other materials. There are gloves that lace close while others slip on and yet others offer a hook-n-loop closure.

What's in a name?

In martial arts equipment...everything is in the name! Choose well-known name brands that are tested to be tried and true.

UFC gloves are the cream of the crop in martial arts equipment for MMA. For karate or TKD Century or KWON is great for all your sparring gear.

Adidas
makes great gloves as well.
And yes, there is a difference in men's and women's gloves. It'is not so much the weight as that goes by your body weight, but the bone structure in the hand. Learn all about which gloves are for women in our reviews

Handwraps
Whether you use Mexican handwraps, herringbone handwraps or sports tape, chances are that you will want to use something to wrap your hands if your going to punch on the bag.

Although some people use the bag to toughen their knuckles, handwraps are recommended.

Training Bags

If you want to enhance your kicks and punches, a training bag is a must in your martial arts equipment ensemble. A training bag will optimize your workout.

You can choose between free standing, hanging bags or even speed bags depending on preference and what you are looking to achieve with it but whatever you do, be sure your training includes at least one bag.

Training with a speed bag will help you develop many qualities such as coordinatioin, distancing, timing and speed.

Heavy bags are excellent to enhance your kicks and punches, as well as strikes. They will toughen you up too!

BOB or BOB XL

A simulated opponent such as a Body Opponent Bag or a Wavemaster is a great addition to your martial arts equipment. It is a freestanding bag so it does not require you to poke a hole in your ceiling or hassle with a bulky stand.
With BOB, you will learn moves that mimic a real sparring partner that can withstand all you can dish out.

It is hard to choose between BOB (Body Opponent Bag) and the heavy bag. They each have unique charactaristics. But how does BOB stack up against the heavy bag?

When training with a traditional heavy bag, your ultimate goal is to develop power and endurance. The ways in which you can train on a heavy bag will vary greatly. However you train, ultimately you are using the bag to expand the attributes of power and endurance. BOB XL offers a something different for your training though.
The BOB XL' is anatomically correct which has significant value for those that may be training for self-defense. It may, however, have limited uses for those training in a MMA program. Because it boasts an anatomically correct design, it provides for soft tissue targets such as the eyes and the throat. In MMA, soft tissue targets are illegal so you definitely want to consider what your purpose for training is.
martial arts equipment: BOB

Actually, there are advantages to using the BOB XL in the sense that you can hit specific knockout points such as the jaw, the liver, and such but you would not be able to hit such areas with accuracy on a heavy bag, since they are not designed to designate those areas. If you are using BOB XL to prepare for a MMA bout, you may want to hit it with the intention of developing effective targeting.

If you only have one choice, what do you choose? Most likely the heavy bag. It is more versatile and has a variety of ways you can use it for working out.

In a perfect world you'd use both. The technical training of BOB, combined with the strength training of the heavy bag would be perfect. So if you can swing it, cross-training on both is recommended.
